So from the 50 units, I would spread ten units each to Mali and Chad and offer five units each to Niger, Guinea, Benin, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Ghana. Three of our partners – Mali,Togo,Guinea and Chad who are in Mali for AFISMA operations, use T55 tanks while Niger, Senegal,Ghana, Burkina Faso and Benin do not yet field MBTs, relying on 90mm gun-armed AFVs(Panhard AML 90s for most, Ratel ICV-90 for Ghana while Burkina Faso use AML 90s and EE9 Cascavel). So I remove the entire foundational haul of 50 T55s(from which this example seen above emerged) from service. Now, if I were in a position to advice the NA High Command, I would say that we have a great chance to advance regional CTCOIN solidarity using these tanks. If like I suspect, the acquisitions came through surplus stocks, then in much the same way as BTR-70(18 units) and MT-LB were(67 units)were modernised before delivery, that supplementary haul of 79 units would be upgraded variants. Post-1999, more T55s have entered NA service and the upward limit which I have heard mentioned as it concerns holdings of T55 tanks is 129 units. This is almost certainly one of those early variants. The T55 tanks first entered NA service with an initial haul of 50 units in 1978. Looking at this tank in the area of its turret, it looks so similar to the T54 that it has to be a very early model of T55. ![]()
